State of emergency declared after Icelandic volcano erupts, first since 1823

REYKJAVIK (BNO NEWS) -- A state of emergency was declared on Sunday after the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted in southern Iceland, the Icelandic Civil Defense said.
It said the surrounding area is being evacuated and that Red Cross shelters are being set up. Ash is falling down in nearby towns.
It is the first eruption of the volcano since 1823.

From Wikipedia:

Eyjafjallajökull

Location Iceland
Coordinates 63°38;N 19°36W; / 65279;63.633°N 19.6°W65279; / 63.633; -19.6Coordinates: 63°388242;N 19°368242;65279; / 65279;63.633°N 19.6°W65279; / 63.633; -19.6
Area 100 km²

Eyjafjallajökull is one of the smaller glaciers of Iceland. It is situated to the north of Skógar and to the west of the larger glacier Mýrdalsjökull.

The icecap of the glacier covers a volcano (1,666 m in height) which has erupted relatively frequently since the Ice Age. The last eruption was from 1821 to 1823, causing a fatal glacier run. The crater of the volcano has a diameter of 3–4 km and the glacier covers an area of about 100 km².

The south end of the mountain was once part of the Atlantic coastline. As the sea has since retreated some 5 km, the former coastline has left behind sheer cliffs with a multitude of beautiful waterfalls, the best known of them being Skógafoss. In strong winds, the water of the smaller falls can even be blown up the mountain.

Between 3rd and 5th of March 2010 there were measured close to 3000 earthquakes at the epicenter of the volcano. Most were very small but some could be detected in the nearby towns.

http://www.grapevine.is/News/ReadArticle/Volcano-Erupts-Under-Eyjafjallajokull

A volcanic eruption has just begun under the Eyjafjallajökull glacier. This has been verified by local authorities in neighbouring Hvolsvöllur. Vísir reports that farms in the Fljótshlíð area and by Markarhlíð are already being evacuated. Locals in the area have confirmed that they are viewing flames and a steady stream of lava from the glacier.

Eyjafjallajökull is an active central volcano. There is reportedly no recorded history of catastrophic eruptions in the area. The volcano last erupted 189 years ago and apparently caused a lot of ash fall in the area. Although speculation on the subject is pretty much useless (especially since your loving team of Grapevine reporters isn't really comprised of geologists or anything, although we scored pretty well in the subject in high school), folks are saying that besides the ash fall the greatest danger lies in glacier bursts or runs stemming from all that hot hot heat melting the glacier. There might be a bunch of water flooding the area pretty soon.

ANYWAY, this is all moot speculation. What we know at the moment is that a volcanic eruption is indeed occurring under the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, and that lava is really, really hot.

More on this as it develops. Hey, we might even be able to get you some pictures. Stay tuned.

FWD:Situation Update No. 10
On 23.03.2010 at 04:13 GMT+2

It is uncertain how the volcanic eruption in south Iceland will develop and the Civil Protection Department still estimates the circumstances as “risky”—if the eruption moves underneath the Eyjafjallajökull icecap there could be flooding. The eruption is under constant observation by the Icelandic Meteorological Office and the coordination center in Skógarhlíd in Reykjavík remains active, Morgunbladid reports. Geophysicist Páll Einarsson has pointed out that there is a connection between the volcano in Eyjafjallajökull and the neighboring volcano Katla underneath the Mýrdalsjökull icecap.

The current eruption could trigger a larger eruption in Katla. “The course of events could develop in various directions and therefore it is important to pay close attention to everything,” Einarsson said. A large area was evacuated after the eruption began around 11:30 pm on Saturday evening and almost 500 people had to leave their homes for the night. The evacuation went smoothly and was completed in approximately two hours. Yesterday, everyone except for inhabitants of 14 farms closest to the eruption zone were allowed to return to their homes. The eruption caused delays to both international and domestic flights and the travel plans of around 4,000 passengers were disrupted as a consequence. Airlines cannot be held responsible for delays in case of natural disasters.

Flights resumed yesterday afternoon but airplanes were required to fly higher than 5,000 feet above the eruption zone. There are volcanic eruptions in Iceland every three years on average. The fiercest eruption that has occurred in Iceland in historic times is the 1783-1758 eruption in Lakagígar. Approximately 80 percent of all sheep and 50 percent of horses and cattle died due to fluorine poisoning and at least every fifth Icelander, around 10,000 people, died from hunger. Ash was carried to the European mainland and other continents—thousands died from poisoning in the British Isles. The climate cooled which caused famine in many countries, including France. So the Lakagígar eruption is believed to have helped fuel the French Revolution in 1789. Former reporter at RÚV Ómar Ragnarsson, who has covered and photographed 21 eruptions in his career, including the current eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, describes it as a “small and shy fire column dance.”
